This hardy and adaptable clematis was introduced to the U.S. in the 1850s and no clematis has ever proved to be more popular. Its large, dark purple flowers measure 5" across and in midsummer they completely cover the vine in a carpet of color. Clematis jackmanii is a strong grower, yet it won't overwhelm a small space.

First year it flowered which I wasn’t expecting. Second year the vines were growing like crazy. I ended up transplanting to the ground this fall after two year in a large pot. Very nice! Pictures are taken 1 year apart

Be prepared to wait (years)

I will agree with the previous commenter that the vine was very small and rather sad when I received it in year one. The first year, it did practically nothing, hardly any foliage and no flowers. The second year, I had quite a lot more growth, a healthy flush of foliage, and three really beautiful flowers. This year, I anticipate it to be much more vigorous and reaching maturity. So, if you aren’t in a hurry, this is a good option. However, if you are looking for a mature plant, this is not it.

Thank you for leaving a review. Some perennials grow more slowly than others. It usually takes a month or more to see new growth on peonies, clematis and alcea, while rudbeckia and heuchera fill out more quickly.
You can expect some newly planted perennials to produce a handful of flowers the first year. More commonly, these young plants will concentrate on getting established and not bloom until the second year.
